  The 2026 World Cup had 48 teams participating for the first time. This meant that there were two knockout rounds: the round of 32 and the round of 16.
  
  10 African teams were there:
  
  Algeria
  
  Cape Verde
  
  DR Congo
  
  Egypt
  
  Ghana
  
  Ivory Coast
  
  Morocco
  
  Senegal
  
  South Africa
  
  Tunisia
  
  Nine teams qualified to the round of 32. Egypt and Morocco made it through to the round of 16. Only Morocco made it to the quarter-finals. After the quarter-finals, all the African teams were out.
  
  One would wonder if any African country can win the men’s FIFA World Cup tournament.
  
  History has shown that some African teams have won junior tournaments previously:
  - Ghana: Won the FIFA U-17 World Cup two times (1991 and 1995) and also won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009.
  - Nigeria: Won the FIFA U-17 World Cup a record five times (1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015)
  - Morocco: Won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2025 by defeating Argentina in the final.

  Morocco hosted the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Twenty-four football teams competed from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026. The host nation did a great job hosting a five-star tournament.
  
  All was well till we got to the finals. Morocco and Senegal were the last two teams standing to compete for the trophy. Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr appeared to score, only for the goal to be disallowed by the referee. Later on, Abdoulaye Seck had fouled Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi. The referee consulted the Video Assistant Referee(VAR). It was a decision that clearly caused tension. After the penalty decision, the Senegalese coach was upset and ordered his players off the field. Some players went off the field. One of the people to remain was Sadio Mane. Mane was also able to convince his teammates to return and finish the game. This moment is a reminder of why this player is one of Africa’s most loved football players
  
  The penalty taker missed the penalty after a failed Panenka attempt. With this, the formal game ended and we continued to extra time. The winning goal was scored by Pape Gueye.
  
  A few days after the winning celebrations, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Committee suspended the Senegalese coach and some of the players from a number of matches. The total fines were a huge amount of money, USD615,000.00

- Africa Emerging Leaders Conference

  Happy New Year Everyone!
  
  I usually start my year with reflections. A conference that still stands out is the Africa Emerging Leaders Conference and Awards hosted at the British Council in Accra(Ghana). The theme was Reawakening Africa: A call to duty!
  
  For me the key lessons were those given by the keynote speaker, Prof. Enoch Opoku Antwi, Dean of Business Administration, Entrepreneurship & Communication Arts at Academic City University, Accra, Ghana.

  -We need to think about long term planning in different sectors: Agriculture, Health, Infrastructure etc
  
  -If we dont believe i nourselves, how do we expect people to believ in us.
  - Anyone an be a leader and do something eg pick up litter.
  - Your passion and purpose will help you become the best leader.
  - Leadership is your Character in Action
  - No one can thrive in a system that doesnt work. Leaders create a system.

- Community Building: MP (Federal Member) visit

  This month we had the pleasure of hosting Joanne Ryan MP Federal Member for Lalor and Chief Government Whip’s mobile office in our area.
  
  Residents came out to discuss issue that were of concern be it transport, safety, sustainability, just to name a few.
  
  The issue I raised was regarding transportation. With a fast-growing population, traffic has become a nightmare, especially the commute to work and there are some delays when using public transport. I was given updates on the current upgrades coming to my area in the next year to two.
  
  As a person living, in the area I felt heard, there was even a follow up email with contact details of someone I could continue my conversation with. It is important for residents to feel heard especially by their local and federal representatives.

- Kirsty Coventry, A National Treasure⭐️🇿🇼

  On 20 March 2025 history was made as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted in their first female and African president, Kirsty Coventry.
  
  She got 49 of the available 97 votes and at 41 years old, is the youngest person to occupy the position.
  
  Coventry has an impressive resume:
  - An Olympian: A total of seven olympic medals (2 being gold medals)
  - Politician: Minister of Sports in Zimbabwe
  - Educated : Bachelor of Human Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management with a minor in Business from Auburn University (United States of America)
  As IOC president, Kirsty will represent and preside over all its activities.
  
  Once again congratulations to my Zimbabwean sister. Makorokoto, Amhlope!

- African Sheroes: Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang

  I’m happy to stat this year by celebrating the Ghanaian vice president madam Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang who was sworn into office on the 7^{th of} January 2025.Ghana has proved they are committed to women empowerment by having the first woman in role.
  
  Prof Opoku-Agyemang was born in Cape Coast on November 22, 1951. She is highly educated, earned her Bachelor’s and Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast. She later pursued her master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature at York University in Canada.
  
  Before becoming a national leader, she served as the first female Vice-Chancellor of Ghana’s University of Cape Coast as well as the Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa. Also, in 2013 she was appointed Minister for Education under John Mahama’s presidency. During her tenure, significant strides were made in education, including the construction of modern facilities, and the provision of free textbooks and school uniforms and phasing out of makeshift “schools under trees.”

- Sibo the Rotarian: Foundation+ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Gala Dinner 2024

  Last weekend, my rotary club, the Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour, hosted a Foundation+ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Gala Dinner. This event celebrated diversity and inclusion in our community.
  
  We had good attendance and engaging performances from Bollywood dancers and Maidens from Polynesia. Speeches also helped the audience reflect on how best to be inclusive and promote equity.

  This year I had the pleasure of celebrating the new year with the Ethiopian community in Melbourne.
  
  There were great performances and young girls adorned with bright-yellow flowers(adey abeba) on their head performed a song called Abebayehosh.
  
  It’s the year 2017 on their calendar. The Ethiopian Calendar is 7 to 8 years behind the Gregorian calendar.
  
  Some interesting facts about Ethiopia
  
  -Ethiopia is one of the African countries that was never colonised.
  
  -The main administrative capital of the African Union is Ethiopia’s capital city: Addis Ababa
  
  –Ethiopian Airlines commands the lion’s share of the African passenger and cargo network operating the youngest and most modern fleet to more than 150 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations across five continents.

  The Blacks in Technology(BiT) networking event in Melbourne was really good. I had the opportunity to meet Africa Australian professionals in Cybersecurity, Data Analysis to name a few.
